6 Steps to Get Organized, by Marie Kondo
Every time I think to myself “I have GOT to get this place organized” , I tend to turn into a deer caught in the headlights! Marie Kondo is an organizing guru, and when I saw these 6 rules to getting organized, I changed my attitude to “ I can do this!”
1) Commit yourself to tidying up. Set time aside , and commit to completing it. Allow yourself the time to take inventory & make decisions of what to keep, and what to discard.
2) Imagine your ideal lifestyle, and consider how positive you will feel once it’s done! If you don’t enjoy board games, but you have shelves full of them, give them away or sell them!
3) Discarding first. If you see things around that have no use, or that do not bring you joy, discard them. It can be by donation, give away, sell , or simply throw away. Bottom line: you don’t need these things in your home!
4) Tidy by Category, not by Room. This might seem a little odd, but think about it… you most likely keep towels in several rooms. Just concentrate on taking inventory of towels, and get rid of duplicates, worn out ones, and others that you just don’t like! Bingo! Another task completed.
5) Follow the order. Stick to the plan. Things that are not used often are probably stored away. Go through these items and honestly think about whether or not you need them. Do you have 10 sets of dishes? See where I’m going with this? There may be someone (even in your own family) that would LOVE to use a set that you forgot you even had!
6) Ask yourself if it “Sparks Joy”. It’s a great way to work out whether you really want to keep something or not. Be honest, and don’t feel guilty for parting with things that you no longer bring you Joy.
There are so many other tips to help get organized and declutter, but this should get you started! Let’s strive for progress and not perfection.
